8:27 a.m.

Bloomington, IN. A single-story house just a block or two off Walnut St.

"*(censored)* I'm going to be late."

The boy looked down at his phone and clicked the home button.

"*(censored)* I am late."

He'd walked to school several times before, mostly because his mom always left for work at 7:15 and she didn't really care to check if he was up or not. His dad -- well, that's a whole 'nother story in itself, but let's just say he's not in the picture. And his brother was 8 years old and took the bus to Templeton every morning.

But even though he'd done it before, it still took around half an hour to walk down to South, maybe 20 minutes on a good day. That's where the board came in.

The boy'd been into skateboarding ever since he'd seen some college kid rolling down 7th on his way to class one morning. That was back 10 years ago, now, back when he was still an only child and back when his dad was still around and took him to campus every Friday and let him sit in on PSY-P101: Introductory Psychology I at 8:00 a.m., and PSY-P102: Introductory Psychology II at 10:10 a.m., and took him to lunch on Kirkwood and let him stuff his face at Nick's and played catch with him in the backyard.

In any case, he had a skateboard -- solid black, with no stickers, because it was brand new and he'd just gotten it for his 14th birthday two days prior and his sticker stock was low -- and he fully intended on riding it to school that morning.

The second day was always harder than the first.

He'd already eaten breakfast (Lucky Charms), brushed his teeth, and gotten dressed, so he was all ready to go.

The ride was a pretty straight shot down Walnut, and if he hit every green light and traffic didn't get in the way, he could make it in 6 or 7 minutes, from the front door of 514 West Dodds to the school office to sign in late -- and traffic wasn't an issue at 8:30 on a Tuesday morning, so he made it in 5.

Late on the second day ... Not exactly the impression he wanted to make off the bat, but if he didn't make it a continuous problem, nobody would remember by week two.

"Hey," he said to the office secretary, Mrs. McVey, one of his mom's close friends.

"Oh hey, kiddo. You all right?" asked the kind-hearted knitting enthusiast.

"Yeah, just running late this morning," he replied. "Mom left before I even got up, so I had to ride here." He held up the board.

"Understandable. Just sign your name here, and the time, and I'll take care of everything else."

He took the clipboard from her and a pen out of the pen jar, and quickly scribbled the time: 8:33 and his name: ......

9:09 p.m.

Bloomington, IN. 514 W. Dodds St. Living room.

"...Well, Ben, I can't *(censored)* give both of you exactly what you want. There's only fifty-five percent to go around, and you're asking for a combined hundred-twenty."

"..."

"...Of course. I understand. Just call me back when you figure it out."

"..."

"..."

"Mommy, do we have any ice cream?"

"...Check the freezer."

"...There's none in here."

"...Then we don't have any ice cream."

"Aw, but I really want ice cream!"

"..."

"...I'll take him. Chocolate Moose's still open."

"Please, Mommy?"

"...Fine. Just don't get hurt out there."

"It's ten minutes away, Mom. We'll be fine."

"..."

"...Alright."

"..."

"..."

"Listen, Ben, you gotta lower your demands just a little bit, and I'll see what I can do. There's no way Goldstein's giving up control."

"..."

"If you get 45, and he keeps 40, he's not gonna be happy, capiche?"

"..."

"..."

"If you go 45, 40, 15, I think that's agreeable for everyone."

"..."

"Get them on, then. Let's do this before you flip out and start asking for 92."

"..."

"..."

"Good evening, Mr. Goldstein, Miss Burrows. Sorry for such a late call, but I think we've finally found the perfect offer."

"... I'd like five T-shirts, please."

The man stared back at him from across the counter with a perplexed look.

"What size?" he finally managed. Hayden listed off the sizes -- a youth small for his brother, an adult small for himself, two adult mediums for his mom, an adult extra-large just for fun.

"Alright, that'll be $80."

Hayden questioned his motives, then wondered how he happened to end up with four 20-dollar bills. No matter. He forked them over to the cheery worker, who then hopped back to the back room to find the shirts. They weren't advertised anywhere in the shop, he wasn't particularly sure how this kid had found out about them but 80 bucks was 80 bucks and they had a bunch of shirts laying around for some reason so 16 bucks a pop sounded just right.

On the patio outside, a crowd of teenagers started to assemble. Some came in and ordered drinks, like the shaggy-haired kid who'd now downed half a glass of peppermint tea and was eagerly chatting with a couple of the other kids outside. Hayden could only manage to pick up something about a gay hockey webcomic and the kid with the tea excitedly asking for its name. Looking out to the patio, he thought he recognised a couple of his schoolmates, though he didn't claim to know anyone in the group by name. Perhaps he'd passed by one of them in the halls going from one class to another.

The man finally returned with the shirts. A girl behind Hayden was rather impatiently waiting to order, so he quickly folded them up and tucked them in his backpack.

What now?

A. Join the group of kids outside
B. Flirt with the girl
C. Just go home or whatever
D. Seize the means of production

"Hey," Hayden said, struggling to come up with a pick-up line. "Y...ou come here often?"

The girl took a sip from her coffee then turned to face him. "...Every Thursday, for the most part." She had dark, curly hair, brown eyes, and an inviting smile.

"Oh?"

"We all do. It's our meeting place, y'know?"

"Meeting... place...?"

"You're new here, aren't you?" She took another sip.

"Lived here all my life," Hayden said proudly.

"I mean here. Like Hopscotch here."

"Oh, I mean, I've been here a few times. My mom comes here a lot."

"Yeah, okay. We meet here every Thursday at 7, after they close. Which, come to think of it, it's 6:55. People should probably be coming inside."

"Inside? But if they're closed..."

"They let us use the place, long as we clean up after," she said.

"Hmm."

"Someone sweeps, someone mops. How it's always been."

What now?

A. Stick around and flirt some more (but also join the meeting)
B. Say goodbye, but come back the same time next week in hopes of finding the girl again
C. Leave and never come back
D. Some sort of irrational fourth answer

"Well, I guess if they're closing, I better get going."

"You're always welcome to join the meetings!"

"Maybe next week. Mom texted me and said dinner's ready so I gotta get home."

"Oh, alright. Hope to see you again soon!"

Score! She even liked me!
