What exactly in the gameplay does this change other than the generic initial selection if you choose Auto?

If you pick manual, you spend all the upgrade points on whatever you want. If you pick auto, it automatically spends points to develop the kind of character you chose, although you can still spend them yourself if you get the opprotunity.
