The Rays have completed their draft and have selected 2 players along with signing 1 free agent.

Picks:
1st Round, 30th overall - Neal Totten, LF
2nd Round, 60th overall - Jonah Vermilyea, Long relief

Free Agent - Cory Wade
FA signs used/allowed - 1/2

Our take,
Totten is right out of high school which is why he might be in the minors for a while, but scouts predict him to be an all-round above average player; similar to Crawford without the elite speed. Totten is considered the Rays' 2nd best prospect behind Tyler Gemoll.
Vermilyea has a nice fastball and could use a decent amount of grooming in order to settle in on a more stable spot in the future.

New Rule (?):
I think im gonna try to mimic real-life with the compensation pick, as in when im unable to sign a player in their arbitration years (less than 6 years MLB exp) then I am allowing myself to FA sign a rookie gray bar player without it counting against my FA signing limit.

The Rays were surgical in a win against the Reds; limiting them to 3 hits. Sonnanstine had a perfect gaming going into the 5th when Dunn hit a screamer into the outfield. Upton's solo shot was the only run of the game when he took Weathers deep in the 3rd. Upton and Gomes continue to fight for the team's HR leader.

Kazmir dominated the Blue Jays en route to his 3rd win of the season; along with having 14 K in 7 IP. Because the Rays have a day off after, Miller was called in to get a 6 out save. Gomes gave the Rays a huge boost with his 2 RBI in the 5th inning.

The Rays have completed 2 trades in the past two days, both with bottom dwelling teams; Reds (36-50), and the Orioles (40-47).
.
.
.
The first trade:
Reds receive - Nathan Haynes, Ryu Jae-kuk, Rod Stults (2nd round pick from 2009), and 10000 cash since Majewski has a 3 year contract with a 410 AAV
Rays receive - Gary Majewski, and Brian Anderson

The second trade:
Orioles receive - Jeff Day, Chuck James, and Kyle Synder
Rays receive - Danys Baez, George Sherrill, and Edison Volquez
.
.
.
.
Analysis -
It seems the Rays are going bullpen heavy with their additions thus far. The main trade piece in the Reds trade was Rod Stults, one of their SP prospects, along with Nathan Haynes who still has a couple more years of arbitration control. Gary Majewski has been great so far sporting a 2.91 ERA on the season. This was a very strategic move since the Rays now have Majewski for 3 years on a team friendly contract. Brian Anderson is an excellent fielder that can be subbed in during tight situations.

The main trade piece in the Orioles trade was Jeff Day as the 22 year old was just toiling in the minors. Chuck James is also a nice piece for the Orioles since he will produce quality outings when played. As for the Rays' end, Danys Baez returns back to Tampa Bay since his tenure from 2004-2005 - he is also on the final year of his contract so this may just be a rental piece for now - only having a 3.79 ERA but the large contract gave the Rays some leverage for acquiring him. George Sherrill was on the IL during the transaction with wrist inflammation (actually was in AAA during the trade) and will remain there for some time; we're not sure if there will be a roster spot when he returns. Edison Volquez is a flame throwing starter but has been awful for the past two years (7.09 ERA this season, 31 ER in 39.1 IP), this may have just been a roster clearing spot for the O's. At the same time Volquez's ceiling is high enough for a low end starter, but that window looks dim.

The Rays still have some more cap space that can be used, so we'll see which part they may wish to improve during the rest of July.

Trades used/allowed - 2/3
Team payroll/cap - 81060/84000

henlo, standard default layout for Baez. Born in 1977, he'll be 33 y/o at the end of this season. So he'll have 2 more full years (2.5 including 2010) before skills start to deteriorate.

Burnett out match Shields in a dominating dual-pitchers performance. Burnett racking up 15 K in a 9 IP CGSO. As his counterpart, Shields, threw 8 2/3 IP with 12 K. There was a scary moment in the game when Crawford attempted to steal 2nd during the 1st inning. He came up limping after his slide and was escorted to the dugout; he eventually returned and played the rest of the game. Shields faltered in the 6th inning when he gave up a string of hits to Rolen (run) and Rios (RBI) who both had perfect bloopers - the only run of the game.

idk why my game showcase rotation ends up on toronto about 9 times out of 10 but w/e
also, if you've noticed our pitchers are able to play with a higher pitch count now because Riggans has the Good Catcher ability (for this entire season so far).

BREAKING: The Rays (57-43) and White Sox (43-57) have agreed to a block buster trade.

White Sox receive: Evan Longoria and Edwin Jackson
Rays receive: Kyle Lohse, Matt Thornton, and Nyjer Morgan

The main trade pieces would be Longoria and Lohse. Lohse has a 3 year, 5730 AAV contract whereas Longo still has 7 years with a 4890 AAV contract. Subsequently Tyler Gemoll (Rays #1 prospect) will be called up to be the teams' starting shortstop); Zobrist moves over to 3B. Smoltz was bumped from the rotation for Lohse, as it was rearranged as well. Thornton and Morgan will remain in AAA.

It seems that the move is to help the Rays will payroll wiggle room. Lohse has been excellent (2.87 ERA) and is locked up for 3 years. The Rays would have to deal with E-Jax being a FA next year so it seems like a nice replacement. Longo has not been preforming up to standards (.231 BA with 9 HR) and his contract takes a nice chuck of the payroll for years to come; seems that the Rays are willing to take the risk that he becomes a super start later on in the deal rather than now. The Rays also have a decent amount of reliever depth, if Smoltz and Foulke decide to hand up their cleats it doesn't seem like they'll be short staffed.

Trades used/allowed - 3/3
Rays payroll/cap - 78850/84000

I guess I ought to take Terrero as my client, since he is literally my player

As seen in the last showcased game, Rays now fell victim to the smallest possible score against the Yankees. Only one bad inning lead to the game's only score as Cueto only allowed 1 hit in the other 6 innings against the Bronx Bombers - Cueto actually gave up half the amount of hits that the Yankees allowed but still came up with the loss (because W/L records show who's better all the time :CryingLaughEmojiThatNormiesOveruseForLiterallyEverything: ). Boyd was spectacular for the Yankees, but the high K numbers lead to him being pulled early for fatigue. The Rays had a few innings with a couple of hits but were unable to find home plate during them.

The Rays have placed Ben Zobrist on the 10 day IL today (retroactive to 8/12). He exited the 8/12 game early with knee soreness; at first was considered Day to day. We've been informed that he won't require more than 10 days on the IL. Elliot Johnson has been called up and will start at 2B for the duration of Zobrist's IL stint.

Price threw a Maddux CGSO against the Royals; a 1-0 win. Meche also had a good game as well almost going the distance but was .1 IP away from a CG on his end. The game had a combined 9 hits so this was a great example of a chess match for a pitcher's duel. The last few games that we've showcased have been very low scoring, we'll see if this trend continues into the final month for the Rays as they are still pushing for another playoff berth.
