The Rays dropped another potential win, this time to the Blue Jays. The Rays had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the 7th when the Jays knocked in a couple of runs followed by a Scott Rolen 3-run home run to take (and hold) the lead. The entire Rays' bullpen has been a mess this season; the lowest ERA - of the bullpen - belongs to Orvella at a pedestrian 3.86. The 2nd lowest belongs to Chamberlain at 6.23. Affeldt and Miller are both above 7.50 at the moment. The bullpen should find its tracks, but it might explain the poor start the Rays are having so far on the season.

quick note that i forgot to include a couple of posts ago... other than Gross and Schierholtz obtaining RF eligibility. Sonnanstine learned how to throw a changeup from Shields and Kazmir (@PP27)

The Rays shutout the Indians 2-0. Rays' management seems to still trust the pen to close out the games even though they might've been able to stretch Shields out for the rest of the 8th inning. The Rays were only able to find home plate during the 1st inning but it proved to be enough for the rest of the game.

The Rays came away with the win due to a season-high 12 runs. Price somewhat fell apart at the end of his outing but Orvella was able to keep the White Sox' bats quiet for the time being. The first pitch that Miller threw was clobbered for a solo home-run by Quentin and the offense continued to pound Miller. His ERA ballooned up to quadruple digits.... after the game it was announced Miller was removed from the closer role. Affeldt now takes over as the closer and Orvella into the set-up spot.

wow i havent been good with this posting stuff for 2012 lol. only was able to get the score out of it. and for the prior post, i removed the 'minor league options' part since i never took that into consideration before

Before the game the Rays sent Andrew Miller to AAA and recalled Edinson Volquez. Miller had a 14.2 ERA in 13 1/3 IP. It remains unknown how long he will stay down there for, but his recent 2y/3000 contract might influence more playing time than others.

The Rays shutout the Rangers with a 3-0 win. Cueto went 7 innings, followed by Orvella and closed by Affeldt (~6.80 ERA now). Upton had 2 solo home runs in this game, the 1st one in the 4th inning, and the 2nd one in the 8th inning. As for the lineup it seems that the coaching staff have settled with Gross and Rush as the primary players for right field and catcher.

The draft has finished and the Rays came away with 3 new players:

1st round, 30th overall: John Roney
2nd round, 60th overall: Lance Sandberg
Compensation pick*: Jesse Budzinski

* = from the Tigers (Iwamura signing, only had 4 years MLB exp)

(Last year's draft pick) Yamato Koga and John Roney are both power-leaning 3B. They both could see time at the corner infield positions (& DH) if they stay on a MLB roster.
.
.
.
.
After the draft was completed, the Twins agreed to terms on a trade for Andrew Miller and 2000 cash. The Rays received Matt Guerrier with yet another team friendly contract (4y/740). Guerrier is on the IL (was in AAA on the Twins) with shoulder discomfort but should return within the next few days. Seems that the Rays didn't want to take the risk of Miller finding his groove and would rather dump the contract for the time being. (salary cap was exceeded from draft picks, but the trade fixed the problem)
.
.
.
.
After that trade was completed the Rays signed FA Shawn Marcum with a 2y/1010 contract. He was immediately put on the 25-man roster and slotted into the set-up role moving Orvella back to general relief. The move sends Majewski down to AAA with his 6.30 ERA. The Rays' achilles heel this year has been the bullpen, it looks like management is attempt to fix the problem. Marcum should be a solid pickup.

Rays payroll/cap - 86880/87500
Rays FA signings used/allowed - 1/2
Rays trades used/allowed - 1/3

Sonnanstine was surgical en route for a win against the Mets (lmao). Racking up 14 K's in 7 IP; his only plunder was giving up the shutout in his final inning. As for the Rays at the plate, LaRoche started the lead early by hitting a 2-run home run in the 1st inning. The final run came via the long ball as Upton hit a solo home run in the 6th.

A day after the game, Guerrier was activated from the IL and Nyjer Morgan was sent down to AAA. The Rays now have a 3-person bench. It may be shifted back to 4 players if a pitcher starts to falter.

The Rays beat the Yankees 4-1, Kazmir now improves to 9-1; he lost his shutout bid in the 9th inning when A-Rod took him deep - which also pulled Kazmir from the game. Surprisingly, A-Rod hasn't even touched the double digit home run total yet. The Rays' took advantage of the game in the middle-late innings where they scored at least 1 run in 3 straight innings.

The Rays made 3 roster moves over the past few hours. Their first course of action was to trade for Jack Cust - from the Athletics (37-44) - for Gary Majewski and Nyjer Morgan. Majewski's agent requested a trade since this is a contract year for him and being in AAA would hinder his chances for a nice contract next season. They called Cust up to the MLB roster and sent Volquez back down to AAA. Volquez has trained to the point where he can max out his fastball at 105 MPH but it often tends to find too much plate resulting in his 7.88 ERA. Cust will most likely be a bat off the bench; beating this with a dead horse but he has a team friendly contract inked at 4y/740.

The final move of the day was the free agent signing of Andres Fruto.

Rays payroll/cap - 86900/87500
Rays FA signings used/allowed - 2/2 (maxed out for 2012)
Rays trades used/allowed - 2/3

because riggans and schierholtz have vs lefty 5, i'll be able to deploy a counter-lefty lineup

(gross has vs. lefty 1, votto has vs. lefty 2)

Lohse threw a CG against the Yankees with the final score being 9-2. Power came from LaRoche and Crawford each hitting their own home run. Upton stole 2 bases and attempted for a 3rd but was thrown out in the 7th inning. Upton is having a career year, with his contract expiring this season and the Rays hovering around the WC spot, his performances make for an interesting story to follow.

The Rays (57-41) and White Sox (50-48) have completed a trade. It is just a 1-for-1 player swap with the Rays sending 8000 cash to the ChiSox as well. The Rays get Gavin Floyd and the White Sox get Johnny Cueto. Floyd is poised to be a free agent at the end of 2012, but his sparkling 2.65 ERA may turn some heads and offer him a large contract. So for now he may just be a rental for the Rays. Cueto - with a 4.84 ERA - still has 3 years of team control.

The Rays beat the Orioles 6-3 in a game with some late inning action. After going up 3-0 the O's tied it up with Marcum on the mound but the Rays came back with a Gross 3-run home run in the 9th inning. Gross has been steadily one of the top hitters (idk like top 30 position players?) after riding the pine for a few years with the Rays. Floyd made his Rays' debut and it was better than expected; a somewhat short outing but still produced 5-shutout innings.

(accidentally forgot the standings before i simulated ahead, pretty much the same spread as the last post)

August 12th, 2012

A 9th inning effort for the Rays wasn't good enough to send the game into extras as they lost 4-2 against the Angels. Refusing to be shutout, the Rays loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 9th. Gemoll ripped one to left field, it just missed going over the fence - almost by a foot. Crawford grounded out to end the game.

After the game, Jeremy Affeldt was removed from the closer role and placed into the general relief corps. Marcum takes over as the closer and Guerrier moves to the set-up role. Affeldt hasn't seen his ERA dip below 5.50 since the first month of the season (at 6.26 now)
