July 29th, 2013 Shields had an excellent outing against the Twins - almost throwing a SO CG - K-ing 14 batters. His pitch count was exceedingly high (i usually equate 80-85 pitches in MLBPP to 100 IRL) so after he gave up back-to-back doubles, he was pulled for Marcum to get the save. The Rays may not be able to rely on the long-ball as much but they can put hits together to plate some runners. . . Players on IL: Matt Cain - Out for 2013, expected to return in 2014... Torn labrum Max Scherzer - Out for 2013, expected to return in 2014... Knee surgery Andrew Miller - Undetermined return for 2013... Wrist discomfort Jack Cust - Expected back late August 2013... Strained calf muscle

Gemoll has come into his own. I’m curious to see Lizarraga’s abilities |

August 13th, 2013 The Rays beat the Yankees 7-2. The first 3 runs for the Rays came from a Crawford-Gemoll combo. Crawford would have a base hit, get to second (either SB or from a double) and Gemoll drove him in. That happened on 3 consecutive batting order go-arounds. The last of the offense came from an Ensberg 3-run HR in the 7th inning. It seems that the Rays are using a setup-person by committee since Guerrier hasn't been seen in the 8th inning all that often.

August 28th, 2013 Prior to the game Andrew Miller and Jack Cust were activated from the IL. Corey Patterson and Joba Chamberlain were sent down to AAA. After a game-tying grand slam from LaRoche, the Rays fell to the White Sox 7-5. The grand-slam followed a bad inning from Fruto after letting the ChiSox score 4. Eventually they added some more runs with eventually decided the game.

September 10th, 2013 Mark Prior pitched the game of his life, throwing an incredible 11 innings with 18 strikeouts and 3 hits allowed (0 BB). He dialed in his early 2000's-self by topping his career high in K's for 1 game (16 in 2004). It could also be one of the most unexpected outcomes in the majors since his 8.23 ERA at the beginning of the game would hint this wasn't possible. Not to mention that Bannister also threw a game for his career almost going 10 IP with 14 K's. Cust ended the game with a moon shot 2-run HR in the bottom of the 11th. i did not fast game sim this matchup, even tho that's how most of them turn out when you simulate it that way

September 25th, 2013 The Rays hit a trio of HR in a 7-4 win against the Blue Jays. Crawford led off the bottom of the 1st with a solo HR. Cust's in the 3rd, and Gemoll followed in the inning after (both 2-run HR). Not the best of outings for arguably the best pitcher in the past 5 years, but Kazmir still managed to earn a win in this one. . . The Rays have already been eliminated from playoff contention, so the next post will be end of the season stats.

November 1st, 2013 If curious to see how the post season worked out, the Rockies beat the Yankees - in 7 games - to win the World Series (former Ray Jonny Gomes is on the Rockies). Below that are the season stats from all the players. (I was too lazy to crop out Marcum from the batting stats, im not even sure why the game uses pitchers to hit so often).

Rough year, but Kazmir was solid as usual and Gemoll broke out. |

November 2nd, 2013 No Ray player has posted their retirement so the same roster will carryover into contract negotiations. The Rays only had 1 award winner from the 2013 season: Gold Glove (OF) - Carl Crawford . . . The new salary cap has been posted. Decrease from 90350 to 89000 (1000 from inflation, -2350 from team performance).

January 1st, 2014 After the contract negotiations, the Rays lost 4 players in free agency: (gonna use AAV this time, makes it easier to read) Adam LaRoche (opted out) - signed a 1y/8000 with the Reds Shawn Marcum - 1y/9000 with the Dodgers Joba Chamberlain - 1y/1500 with the Royals Brandon League - 1y/1550 with the Tigers . . Some of the bigger name retained signings the Rays completed are: Carl Crawford - 5y/13000 --> 5y/17000 Andrew Miller - 2y/3000 --> 1y/2000 Elliot Johnson - 1y/2000 --> 1y/3000 Max Scherzer - 1y/1850 --> 2y/3600 Tyler Gemoll - 1y/460 --> 1y/3600 (pre-arb. contract last season) David Price - 1y/850 --> 2y/3000 (pre-arb. contract last season) Edinson Volquez - 1y/900 --> 3y/2300 (pre-arb. contract last season) . . . Winter meetings has pretty much concluded. The Rays only signed 1 player during said event, and also used 1 FA acquisition. The signing was with Ambiorix Burgos - 5y/1000 The acquisition was with Troy Glaus - 2y/4010 Burgos may be slotted into the bullpen for the season while Glaus should fight for the starting 3B role this upcoming season; his skills have diminished but the Rays are taking a chance. . . Finally, the Rays did not resign Rich Aurilia and Luis Rivas. They also unconditionally released Ray Durham and Shannon Stewart; making the 4 of them FA. . . Rays FA acquisitions used/allowed - 1/2 Rays payroll/cap - 86460/89000

April 1st, 2014 The Rays have released their Opening Day roster for the 2014 season. Neal Totten will be making his MLB debut tomorrow when they face the Yankees at the Trop. Totten was their 1st round pick (30th overall) in 2010. The 23 year old is still projected to have an Ichiro/Crawford like skill set. Lizarraga and Riggans will be splitting time behind home plate again.
