Boston Takes Game One

Despite many people saying it would be impossible for Boston to take game one against Rich Harden, they did it. In 2.2 innings, Harden, along with Burnett, were removed from the game but each for a different reason:

"[Burnett] was doing excellent." Francona said, "There was no reason for me to take him out of the game when I did, but we'll need him later on in this series." Terry Francona, Boston's manager, has already won two World Series titles. He's looking for his third with Boston.

Lou Pinella, Chicago's manager, is looking for his first World Series title with the Cubs. "It's exciting to be here," Pinella said. "We deserve it. All of us deserve it. It's a sign of things to come, really. All we need to do is play hard out there and win." Pinella hinted the reason he took Harden out of the game was because he gave up so many runs, but didn't say for certain. "When you have your staff ace giving up so many runs, you need to take him out. Especially in the World Series. He needs to go and learn how to pitch again for the series with the coach!"

Joe Mauer was the Player of the Game; he went 2-4, a double, with two RBIs and a run scored. He also gunned down three would-be basestealers.

Tonight's game features Ryan Dempster (2-1, 3.60 ERA) vs. Daniel Bard (2-0, 2.81 ERA). Boston is currently leading the World Series one game to zero.

David Wells has been signed to a suppose two year deal, worth an estimated value of 2.5 million dollars a year, with a player option. The deal also includes a no-trade clause and a 800,000 dollar bonus for winning the Cy Young Award. He was signed by Toronto.

Veteran Wells Signed by Jays
October 24, 2009

Image

Most fans are excited the David Wells, or Boomer, is coming back to where it all began to play ball. However, some fans are worried about how much money is being shelled out for the aging star. Baseball News Network (BNN) first reported this story as a rumor last week and question the Blue Jays General Manager about it, but he laughed it off and called it a "rumor". Since then, the deal has been finalized by both sides for an estimated 2,500,000 million dollars a year for two years, with a player option for a third.

Wells has a career record of 239-157 with an ERA of 4.13 and 2201 strike outs. The forty-six year old superstar's fate will be decided by his performance in Spring Training. This is the second time this week that an old veteran has been signed by a ball club. Earlier this week, the Red Sox signed baseball's disputed home run champion to a minor league deal. Bonds is currently in Triple-A awaiting Spring Training.

According to Scott Boras, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa are also thinking about coming back into baseball - with what team is unknown, but he says "teams will bid all they can for the hall of famers".

I'll bring back Williams in his prime.

I'm kidding.

People who are alive and old enough to play baseball, not seventy-three year old men who would need a nap in the middle of the game!

Red Sox World Champions

Another season is in the books. A very good season, at that. It started with the Red Sox in last place in the American League East Division most of the season, but towards the trading deadline... Theo Epstein made a series of moves which put them in first. His most succesful move was the acquisition of Adam Dunn, who had a career year. He hit forty-four home runs and batted a hair over .300. In Wrigley Field, the Cubs' chances at winning a World Series ended. Boston destroyed the Cubs 12-3...

They can wait another one hundred years. They [the Red Sox] have finally reached their true potential.

On the other hand, Joe Mauer also had a career year. According to Sports Illustrated and Baseball News Network, he's the most likely winner of the 2009 AL MVP Award. He does deserve it, that's for sure...

Daniel Bard is a shoe in for the Cy Young Award and Elvis Andrus who lead the majors in stolen bases with one hundred plus is expected to claim the Rookie of the Year Award. They both deserve whatever is coming to them.

Now...

One of the newest pick ups for Boston, John Smoltz, retired. He is on the ballot for the Hall of Fame, along with Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson, Tim Wakefield, Frank Thomas, Ken Griffey Jr., and Barry Bonds. If you think any one of these players should be in the Hall of Fame, just respond to this blog post with a "yes" by the player's name. Mike Mussina, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, and Brian Giles are also eligible, so is Roger Clemens...

Likewise, Takashi Saito is a dark horse in the voting. It is not possible for him to get in without the veteran committee help. He'll be eligible in another five years.

Many managers got fired, too. Most notably, Bobby Cox was canned by the Atlanta Braves. The Braves went 76-86 under his watch in 2009. According to Boston's General Manager, Theo Epstein, when asked about a possible hiring:

"[Cox] would be a great addition to our coaching staff. However, it's not realistic. If I want to fire our bench coach, sure, but you don't go out and fire a World Series winning manager."

After Epstein's comments, Boston's bench coach was canned...

For Boston, they look like this:

Mauer had a fantastic season, Joey Votto did as well. Adam Dunn was terrific. Daniel Bard, the rookie, showed the veterans up... the list goes on and on.

Boston has many players who are eligible for arbitration... they are currently negotiating a deal with Jonathan Papelbon to get him AWAY from arbitration.

If I wanted Longoria and I do, I'd have to give up the farm and then some.
