Ice Wolves Starting Pitchers Report
by an Ice Wolves Scout

SP- Szuminski:
Notable Stats: 0-4 W-L, 2.62 ERA, 39 K, 34.1 IP, 40-17 GO-AO, .344 BABIP, 5 QS

Description: Szuminski's April can be described in one word: unlucky. Forget the 0-4 record and even the 2.62 ERA, and you'll find that Szuminski has been fantastic. For starters, he has had a combined three runs of support this April, despite an ERA of 2.62. Secondly, his ERA shouldn't be that high in the first place. "The team's defense has been terrible when he's on the mound" said an Ice Wolves sabermetrician. "For example, 70% of his outs put in play are ground outs, and yet he has a BABIP of .344." One think to take from Szuminski's performance: he should improve in May.

SP- Riley:
Notable Stats: 0-2 W-L, 2.45 ERA, 46 K, 33 IP

Description: Riley leads the league in strikeouts, and is a legitimate starter. Although he has regressed in his last two starts (5.78 ERA), most people have confidence in him. "That kid over there is crafty, and I expect him to be a good major league pitcher for years to come" says pitching coach Ryan Techer. Riley should rebound from his last two starts to have a good year.

SP- Abraham:
Notable Stats: 0-2 W-L, 5.13 ERA, 33 K, 26.1 IP, 26-7 GO-AO, .430 BABIP

Description: Like Szuminski, Abraham hasn't been as bad as his stats seem. In fact he has been pretty good. Because how can you have a BABIP of .430?! The defense behind him has been terrible to say the least, and 79% of his outs in play have been on the ground. He has, however, improved drastically in his las two starts (0.69 ERA), so he should maintain this level.

SP- Gautreau:
Notable Stats: 0-2 W-L, 2.55 ERA, 24 K, 24.2 IP, .405 BABIP

Description: Gautreau didn't get raving scouting reports before the season began, but he's beginning to hold his own at the major league level, despite his defense not performing well behind him. If he keeps pitching at this level, he should become a solid major league starter.

SP- Clippard:
Notable Stats: 0-1 W-L, 2.53 ERA, 24 K, 21.1 IP, .435 BABIP

Description: Clippard's has been a lot like Gautreau's: ERA in the 2.50's, 24 strikeouts, not-innings eaters, but give quality innings, and terrible defense behind them. Expect Clippard to have a great year.

SP- Veras:
Notable Stats: 0-1 W-L, 2.84 ERA, 24 K, 25.1 IP, .242 BAA

Description: Veras has had a very solid rookie season, showing great poise and stamina in his four starts so far. Despite some elbow trouble this month, we expect more of the same from him, or an even better performance.

Overall Analysis: The starting pitching has been extremely good, with an ERA of just 3.00, with a combined 165 innings pitched and 190 strikeouts. Also, in our last report on the fielders, we said they have been phenomenal. However, looking deeper than fielding percentage, this has not been the case for these starters. This can be good though, as it means that these pitchers are more likely to progress than regress. Another problem is run support. Despite their ERA of 3.00, they have a combined record of 0-12. Yes this is also ridiculous, and we do expect it to progress. With a bright, young rotation, the Ice Wolves have a solid core of starters to build their team around.

BTW, if you don't know, BABIP stands for Batting Average on Balls In Play.

Ice Wolves Relievers Report
by an Ice Wolves Scout

RP- Bonilla
Notable Stats: 1-1 W-L, 1.01 ERA, 25 K, 26.2 IP
Description: Bonilla has been a fixture in the Ice Wolves' bullpen, and has dispelled any doubts about his control before the season. However, a few Ice Wolves scouts say his heavy workload is a cause for concern. "He has more innings than a few of their starters, and he has pitched almost every day" said an Ice Wolves Scout. Ronald Miller has a choice to make if he wants to save his best bullpen arm.

RP- Hampson
Notable Stats: 2-1 W-L, 0.69 ERA, 10 K, 13 IP, .189 BABIP, .149 BAA/OBAA, 7 H (all singles)
Description: Some may argue that Hampson has been better than Bonilla in his pitching. "That kid has been clutch, and his prospect ceiling is higher than ever" said Ronald Miller. I asked another scout if his .189 BABIP is sustainable, and he said "Absolutely not. Does that mean he won't be great? No. I wouldn't be surprised if he finishes with an ERA of under 2.00 for the year, though."

RP- Ruan
Notable Stats: 0-0 W-L, 4.91 ERA, 15 K, 11 IP
Description: Ruan's season has not been great thus far, but he has served his purpose of eating innings out of the bullpen. Expect him to have a similar workload in May.

RP- Duff
Notable Stats: 1-3 W-L, 3.72 ERA, 12 K, 9.2 IP, .378 BAA, .391 OBAA
Description: Don't let the 3.72 ERA fool you: Duff has not nearly fulfilled expectations. He has been torched by hitters at a .378 clip, and has 3 losses that could have easily been wins had reliable relievers such as Bonilla and Hampson been on the mound. "I'll give him time to develop" said Ronald Miller. "I'll still be throwing him out there.

RP- Elder
Notable Stats: 0-1 W-L, 0.96 ERA, 11 K, 9.1 IP, .212 BAA
Description: Elder has surprised some as a good option out of the bullpen. If he keeps performing, he may have a spot to stay in the major leagues.

RP- Padgett
Notable Stats: 2-0 W-L, 2.35 ERA, 12 K, 7.2 IP, .314 BAA, .450 SLGAA
Description: Despite Padgett's 2-0 Win-Loss record and 2.35 ERA, he has been unspectacular, and in danger of regressing in May. His .314 Batting Average Against and .450 Slugging Percentage Against shows how lucky he has been. "I'll start listening to the scouts when his ERA is above 5.00" said manager Ronald Miller. "For now, he's been good for me."

RP- Kuzmic
Notable Stats: 1-0 W-L, 1.23 ERA, 7.1 IP, 7 K, .310 SLGAA
Description: Kuzmic has done very well in his appearances so far, his key to success is the .310 Slugging Percentage Against. If he holds hitter's power at bay, he could be a reliable late-inning option in the future.

RP- Pickler
Notable Stats: 1-1 W-L, 6.35 ERA, 5.2 IP, 10 K, 1 SV, .370 BAA, .588 BABIP
Description: Pickler has 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings, but has a .370 Batting Average Against. How does that happen? A .588 BABIP. "I'm not sure it's even possible to have a BABIP that high for an extended period of time" said another Ice Wolves Scout. "I expect him to easily bounce back from this."

RP- Halter
Notable Stats: 0-0 W-L, 6.23 ERA, 4.1 IP, 4 K, 1 SV
Description: We haven't seen a lot of Halter since the beginning of the year, but manager Ronald Miller hinted at wanting to see him back in the majors. "He is a kid who has raw potential to be a closer, I expect to see him up soon" he said.

RP- Bourgeois
Notable Stats: 0-0 W-L, 13.5 ERA, 1.1 IP, 2 K
Description: Bourgeois has been in Triple-A, and only had one performance in the majors, which was below-average anyway.

RP- Conrad
Notable Stats: 0-1 W-L, 81.00 ERA, 0.1 IP, .800 BAA
Description: Conrad had one appearance so far, and it was awful. He will probably be in Triple-A this month.

Overall Analysis: The Ice Wolves bullpen has been a mixture between great and terrible this season. Despite a 2.80 ERA, they seem to be inconsistent, with a win-loss record of 8-8. They do have a strength point in that they have strong stamina in their relievers, which is a key to success. However, they need one key to success: Bonilla, Hampson, Elder, and Kuzmic need to stay on top of their game, while Ruan, Duff, Padgett, and Pickler must improve. If that happens, we'll be looking at the best bullpen in baseball.

Alaska Post
Baltimore Orioles (12-15) @ Alaska Ice Wolves (8-20)
May 1, 2008

Elder, Offense give Ice Wolves 21st Loss
Anchorage-- Clippard didn't have anything to show for throwing 7 shutout innings despite not having his best stuff. When asked if he was disappointed in getting a no-decision in a 1-0 loss, he responded "No, I wouldn't say that. I'm disappointed we lost, though. I don't care about wins because it is a team effort." Clippard's effort was wasted, but he showed signs of being clutch. He escaped three lead-off hits (two of them doubles) unscathed, despite allowing 3 doubles overall. The offense had trouble hitting Brian Burres' curveball, and it was tied 0-0 heading into the top of the 9th. Elder gave up a single to Markakis, and then Aubrey Huff doubled into the Left-Center gap to score pinch-runner Freddy Bynum from first. The Ice Wolves threatened with runners on 1st and third in the 9th, but Sandberg grounded out to 1st to end the game.

Final Score:
Orioles: 1
Ice Wolves: 0

WP- Baez (2-5)| LP- Elder (0-2)| SV- F. Cabrera (6)
HR: None

Burres: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 7 K
Markakis: 2-4, R
Huff: 2-4, 2 2B, RBI

Clippard: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 7 K
Sandberg: 2-4

Alaska Post
Alaska Ice Wolves (8-21) @ Minnesota Twins (15-14)
May 2, 2008
IT'S BACK!!!

Fussell, Pitching Lead Ice Wolves to Victory
Minneapolis-- Fussell, despite struggling with an average around the .230s, still managed to help the team. "He's a natural leader and had hit 13 RBI's with his bat before this game" said manager Ronald Miller. He came up big yesterday with 4 RBI's in a 5-1 win over the Twins. "The pitching has been good, and we deserved to win this one" said Fussell. "I'm glad I could contribute." Starter Veras got the first win of any Ice Wolves starter all year. This was a huge surprise considering that the 'Wolves lead the majors in ERA (2.80), runs allowed (91), strikeouts (312), and walks (12). "The clutch hitting needed to step up and it did today" said Miller. After a quiet first three innings, the Ice Wolves managed two runs off Twins' starter Livan Hernandez, with RBI singles from Fussell and Leon. The 'Wolves extended their lead when Fussell singled on a line drive up the middle with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 6th to 4-0. After Jason Kubel got an RBI single off of Veras in the 6th, Fussell came through with another RBI single, this time off Juan Rincon, in the top of the 8th. Duff closed out the game for his first save of the year as the Ice Wolves improved to 9-21.

Final Score:
Ice Wolves: 5
Twins: 1

WP- Veras (1-1)/ LP- L. Hernandez (2-2)/ SV- Duff (1)
HR: None

Veras: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 5 K
Tovar: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 SO
Fussell: 3-4, 4 RBI, SO
Leon: 1-4, RBI

L. Hernandez: 5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 8 K
Kubel: 2-4, RBI
