The Sunshowers came through the tunnel connecting the dugout and the clubhouse, dejected after their rough 10-9 defeat to the rival Orioles on Opening Day. Greeting them in the clubhouse was Hiroakazu Oshima, who fell apart in the 5th inning to get the loss. Most of teammates didn't even look at him. Neither did manager Joe Maddon, who walked straight to his office, preparing for the post game press conference.

Oshima knocked on the door. "Come in," Maddon said, without looking up from his desk. Oshima sat down, and Maddon finally looked up to recognize the pitcher. "What is it," Maddon asked. "My english... is not very good," Oshima spoke back. "But I think my arm is hurting me a lot.". Maddon was shocked. He could speak english, but more importantly, the star signing of the offseason's prized pitching arm was injured!

"Come with me," Maddon said, walking Oshima to the team's medical staff. Players looked on, but no one really cared or bothered to ask what was wrong. "It's just a normal post game ice up," Brad Revlis said to his locker neighbor. But this wasn't normal, and Oshima knew it. The doctors examined him for a while, and then, after what seemed an eternity, came back with the news.

"The UCL in his right arm has a small tear in it," the team doctor said, showing up an x-ray. "You don't realize how lucky you all are, you've escaped massive damage. A few more pitches thrown and his arm is gone for the rest of the season, and Tommy John would be in order.". "How much time will he miss," Maddon asked. "His next start," the doctor said. "He needs at least 10 days rest before he can get back to pitching every five days.".

"We are lucky," Joe Maddon said to Oshima as they walked out. "But no one must know of this. Understood?". "Yes, coach," Oshima replied. The pitcher sat down at his locker and thought of how he could have gotten the injury. He threw 97 pitches in the game, but that couldn't be it. In Japan, he sometimes threw over 140 pitches! Then it hit him. He had been overworked in Japan, so his team could get more money do negotiate with MLB teams for his contract in America. Shaking with anger, Oshima got up, violently threw his glove into his locker, and ran out of the clubhouse, away from the post game media. Following him quickly, trying to console him was his translator.

"What's wrong with him?" Asked Johnny Patricola. "Probably just saw his ERA," Equanimeous Jackson replied. The Sunshowers enjoyed a nice laugh, and headed back to the hotel, hungry for a win tomorrow.

Dodged a bullet there

15-day-DL? Probably could use another pitcher while he's out.

We've moved to a 4-man rotation, sometimes using McCoy as a 5th. Fun fact: McCoy will start the home opener vs Seattle

Gonna be "that guy" for the moment, x-ray images do not show tissues; those only show bones. A MRI shows muscles, tendons and ligaments. :)

Jacksonville Sunshowers Home Opener
Maddon had done a good cover-up job with Oshima's injury so far, turning to a 4-man rotation in wake of the pitcher's secret injury. However, the home opener came, and Brad Swenson wasn't ready for his turn. Maddon turned to the elderly Mike McCoy, the veteran breaking ball pitcher to start the home opener. Surprised and thought he was being pranked at first, McCoy accepted the spot start.

Two batters into the game, Seattle led 1-0 after back to back hits by Ichiro Suzuki and Jose Lopez. But that was all the damage for the Mariners in the first off McCoy. Quentin MacFarlane led off the bottom of the first for Jacksonville with a line drive single to right, extending his hitting streak to six games. Bob Oblong grounded into a double play, and the struggling Equanimeous Jackson popped out to second to end the frame.

In the bottom of the second, with two out, Garrett House lined a single to center. The next batter, Tim Johnson, crushed a deep fly to center field. The sellout crowd in attendance at Rainbow Beach Stadium all stood on their feet, ready to cheer as the ball sailed over fence - but was hauled in with a home run robbing grab by Ichiro.

McCoy went out to the mound again and again, retiring Seattle's hitters in order. The only problem was that Miguel Batista was too. In the bottom of the fifth, House led off with a double, and T. Johnson drove him in with a single up the middle. Tied at 1. However, Benjamin Goodwin took the life out of the inning by grounding into a double play.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bob Oblong led off with a line drive to the opposite field for a single. Jackson stood in, staring at his .127 BA on the scoreboard. He grounded one up the middle, but it was fielded by Jose Lopez, and turned into a 4-6-3 double play. As Jackson jogged back to the dugout, he started to hear it from the fans. He shrugged it off. Johnny Patricola knew the boos weren't for him, but he knew he had to improve his .207 BA quickly. He did just that, whopping a fastball over the left field fence, 374 feet for his 4th round-tripper of the year, giving the Sunshowers a 2-1 lead. The crowd could cheer again.

After getting the first man out in the top of the seventh, DaDa Radice gave up three base runners in a row. With Jose Lopez up, Maddon signaled for the righty Willard Deustchebog to come in. He struck out Lopez with six pitches. The lefty batter Raul Ibanez stood in, and the lefty thrower Oscar Bell was summoned in from the bullpen to face him. Bell went 3-0, but battled back with two strikes.

3-2, 2 outs, bases loaded, and the Sunshowers up by one. Bell had to do some thinking here, so he called out Goodwin to the mound for a meeting. He couldn't try to get Ibanez to chase an outside pitch, but he couldn't throw one right down the middle. The next pitch was grounded past a diving Patricola, and down the right field line for a two run, go-ahead double. With the base open, Goodwin called for an intentional walk of Richie Sexson. Bell threw his glove in frustration as Maddon took him out of the game. The water cooler fell victim to Bell's wrath as well as he made his way to the showers.

Working with a small bullpen, Maddon brought in Brad Swenson to face Adrian Beltre with the bases juiced. Swenson got ahead 1-2, but the count soon fell to 3-2. Beltre grounded out to third on the next pitch, and the inning was finally over. Jacksonville's offense went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth, and the first two were retired in the ninth.

Garrett House stood in, the only thing keeping this game from being over. He roped a single to right to keep the rally alive. The fans were screaming for a homer when Tim Johnson stood in. His brother, Jim, stood at first, pinch running for House. All Tim needed was a double to score his brother. The infield was playing back with two outs, as T. Johnson grounded one to short. All the way back on the outfield grass, Willie Bloomquist ran in and chucked the ball to first. It was a close call, and it went in favor of the Sunshowers. Two on, two out. A base hit tied it, and a double could win it.

Up stood Jacksonville's best contact hitter, Benjamin Goodwin. He lined a 1-0 to shallow center field. The fans started cheering and the Johnson brothers began chugging their way along the basepaths. Goodwin thought he had tied the game and pointed at his teammates in the dugout. However, he realized their reaction was pure disbelief rather than excitement, and the fans' had become silent.

Ichiro Suzuki had dove to make a spectacular catch, saving the game for the M's. The fans and players of the Sunshowers left the field and the stands in disbelief. The final score: 3-2 Mariners in the home opener.

Tough loss, but I'm very impressed with the Deustche's first performance. Striking out Jose Lopez is no small feat...he's pretty amazing!

Even tougher though is that pitching loss. Is Brad Brad still in the rotation? I have a feeling he'll step it up.
