The Knights are taking on one of the expansion teams from the "NPB Overhaul" put in motion by the new commissioner in 2026, the Osaka Foxes. They're... Not the best team in the Pacific League, to put it kindly. They've been in last place for 7 of the 8 years they've been around. They do have some promising rookies this year, though. The Knights should have no trouble.

Takuji Ootake: His grand slam in the 7th began the Knights' rally
Sakio Matsuno: He pitched a gem to open the Knights season on a high note

As expected, the Knights rolled right over the Foxes. They really blew open the door in the 7th, with Ootake hitting a grand slam with no outs, batting around, and then Fujioka hitting his own grand slam, his second homerun of the day. Kobayashi hit an RBI triple in the 6th for the Foxes with no outs, but they were unable to capitalize.

Matsuno really shined, fanning 10 batters, walking one and only letting up that one run on a mistake pitch to Kobayashi. What a fun game to watch!

I stumbled back into Nomoto's office, but he wasn't there. Probably still talking to the guys... I saw some more papers on his desk. Well... I'm here, so... Might as well!

They happened to be the profiles he had made up for the pitching squad.

Pitchers:

Sakio Matsuno - SP, #21
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
19, L/R, 158 km/h (98 mph), C, A, drop curve - 5, slider - 4, fork ball - 5
A stoic kid fresh out of high school. He was drafted in 2034 in the first round. He’s known for his killer fork ball and ability to strike people out.

Rihito Komura - SP, #57
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
27, R/R, 150 km/h (93 mph), B, B, slider - 6, sinker - 5
He was just acquired by the Knights in 2035 through free agency. When he came up in 2030, he was touted as the next Maeda, and though he hasn’t quite met that peak, he’s still a quality pitcher.

Takaharu Samurakami - SP, #40
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
25, L/L, 159 km/h (99 mph), F, B, 2-seamer, changeup - 2, shuuto - 1
His fastball is only matched by his off-the-wall personality. He lacks control, but sometimes he’s effectively wild. Inconsistent, but very fun to be around.

Keishou Hara - SP, #10
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
31, R/R, 143 km/h (89 mph), A, C, V-slider - 6, SFF - 4, knuckle curve - 5
He’s a soft spoken man who tends to keep out of conversations. One of the smartest men to ever come through the Knights, though. He’s been a background leader for the 5 years he’s been on the team.

Gyou Araki - SP, #28
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
29, R/L, 150 km/h (93 mph), D, B, curveball - 3, slider - 3
He’s terribly average, but he has very crazy hair.

Hideo Yasui - RP, #33
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
37, L/L, 149 km/h (92 mph), C, F, slider - 6, changeup - 1
The lefty-specialist. His wisdom is a blessing for the otherwise very young bullpen. They all look to him for guidance. His beard may make him look menacing, but he’s one of the kindest, most genuine players in baseball.

Akio Ogawa - RP, #50
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
24, R/R, 140 km/h (87 mph), D, E, 2-seamer, slider - 1, shuuto - 2, cutter - 1, drop curve - 2
His plethora of pitches outshines his lackluster fastball. He’s a second coming of Fujii.

His strange mixing of above average fastball, subpar curve and decent knuckler make him unpredictable. He’s been a bit inconsistent, but he has excellent potential.

24, R/R, 151 km/h (94 mph), D, E, hard shuuto - 1, slider - 5, drop curve - 1, changeup - 1
He’s surprisingly good against lefties and racks up the strikeouts. He’s become very popular with the young ladies, as he is actually quite a talented singer and dancer.

Ken Kikuchi - RP, #31
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
22, L/L, 145 km/h (90 mph), C, E, slider - 4, forkball - 3
He serves as the set up man to Tezuka. This is his rookie year, and he hopes to do his hometown of Hokkaido proud.

Masatake Tezuka - CP, #2
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
20, R/R, 159 km/h (99 mph), D, F, cutter - 4, slurve - 2
His deep red hair sets him apart from the rest of the bullpen, and he has somewhat become one of the faces of the Knights. In the offseason, he paints surreal prints and sells them off to the highest bidder. He gives 50% of his earnings to local studios and schools. He’s eccentric and a bit hard to talk with, but he is genuinely kind.

I turned around and saw the glimmer of Nomoto's glasses, "oh! Uh, just... Um... Just looking over the roster."
"Oh, well, I would've just shown you if you'd asked."
"Oh."

Nomoto took the papers from my hands and rearranged them into a pile on his desk. He turned on the lights. "Ahhh" he said when he finally took a seat. "Good win tonight."
"Well," I replied "to be fair, the Foxes are in shambles. They've gone through what, five managers in ten years?"
"Yeah, something like that. A win's a win. I'm not complaining."
"Hey, me neither."

Nomoto pushed up his glasses and leaned back in his chair, "how long you staying in Kyoto?"
"Our season doesn't start until the eighth, so I'll be heading back in a few days. I'll probably visit my brother and sister before I leave."
"Oh yeah, that's right, haha. I forgot you grew up here."
"I've been a Knights fan my whole life! I'm still amazed that I work for them."
"Haha," Nomoto laughed, "it is pretty surreal, isn't it?"
I looked at the ceiling fan, "yeah... It is."

I looked back at my phone, checked the address again, and rang the com.
"Yes?" Came out of the speaker
"Hey Kenma."
"Ryu?! Come on in!"

It's been about a year since I've seen my brother, Kenma. He's got eight years on me, but we get along very well. I try my best to visit him whenever I'm in Kyoto.

He was at the door when I got there.
"Been a while, brother." He said
"Heh, it has."
"How you been?"
We walked into his living room.
"Good, good. Yeah, it's a real trip, you know? Managing, I mean."
"I would imagine." He motioned to the fridge. "You want anything to drink?"
"Huh? Oh, nah. I don't drink anymore."
"Oh jeez, that's right. Sorry man."
"Heheh, don't worry about it."

I sat on the couch. It was actually a pretty crappy one, but it was 'only 5000 yen! How could I refuse?' as Kenma always was sure to remind me.
I heard a woman call from upstairs, "is someone here, Kenma?"
"Yeah," he replied, "Ryu's here!"
The stairs creaked as she came down. "Ryu!" She said, then proceeded to trip down the last two steps. I couldn't help but chuckle.

It was my sister, Miyuki, who's the oldest of the Azuma kids. God, she's what, 39 now? "I see you're just as graceful at 40, Miyuki, hahahaha." I snarked
She brushed herself off, "39, thank you very much. Besides, is that any way to greet your loving, beautiful, sister?"
"Well, you are loving, at least." Kenma interjected.
I let out a big "hah!" Miyuki pouted.
"Oh, shut up, you two."
"Yuki... Don't make that face at me, you know how it hurts me so..." Kenma mocked
"Shut up! It's a wonder how mother dealt with you two."
"With harsh words and even harsher lashings." I said

Kenma went to the fridge, "what do you want, Yuki?"
"Do you still have any watermelon?"
"Yeah, just a little bit."
"I'll take some of that."
"Alrighty. Ryu?"
"Just a water's good."

He came back in with a glass of tap water, a small piece of watermelon and a Koshihikari beer can.
"I can't believe you still like that swill, Kenma."
"What can I say," he took a sip, "I'm a man of habit."

"So how's the team doing, Ryu?" Miyuki asked
"We won our division last year, so."
"Ooh! Congratulations!"
"Yeah, thanks, heheh. It's nice working with the guys, they're all so motivated. It's... great to see."
"Don't get all emotional on me, Ryu. I just had this cleaned."
"Oh, really? I legitimately hadn't noticed."
Miyuki laughed and Kenma gave me his best hurt face. "It was only 5000 yen, Ryu, how co-"
"Could you have passed it up, I know, hahahaha"

We chatted for a while and then went out to lunch at one of the new restaurants down the street. It was, oddly, called "Ryu's." Pretty good, too.

"Well, it's been great seeing you guys again." I said as I was putting my shoes on
"Yeah, you too, brother. Come back soon."
"I will, Kenma. You take care too, Miyuki."
She smiled. "I'll keep my eyes out for some potential husbands in Asuka, heehee."
"Hardy har har" she hardy har har'd, but in her eyes I could tell she was begging me to.

"See you guys, love you."
"Love you too, bro." Kenma waved
"Love you, Ryu. Take care." Miyuki gave me a hug
"See ya."

I grabbed my bag and headed to the train station to catch my 20:00 train back to Asuka.

"Archers, here I come."

The Knights, last year, finally had enough players to start up a second string team. They bought some land in Asuka, a small village that has around 9,000 citizens, named after the Asuka dynasty's palaces that it houses (these). The construction laws are very strict, so it's surprising that they were even able to, but after all the money they brought in for Kyoto, I'm sure that they have a lot of influence in central Japan.

We only play 115 games down here, and last year we came in first in our division, going 73-42.

There's some NPB-level talent down here in little Asuka, and I'm honored to have been chosen as the team's inaugural manager. Before that, the highest I ever managed was my college team, heehee.

"Gah, shoot." I brought my inner monoluge to a sharp stop, "I've got to get down to the locker room..."

I walked through the Royal blue and white hallways to the locker room door, and even though it was closed, I could hear some commotion.

"GAHHH, Ishikawaaaa!" One voice, Satoshi Kura's, came through the rest
I heard a rumpus laugh, Ishikawa's I surmised.

I opened the doors.

Shaving cream.
Everywhere.
What in god's name...
It seemed that no one noticed me.
Well, no one but Saitoh, but he stayed quiet, legs crossed, and sipped his afternoon tea.

I watched as the chaos unfolded. Ishikawa was chasing Kura and Yoshimi, spraying shaving cream all the while. Poor Shimizu was covered in the stuff. It was an ugly scene.

Try as I might, though, I couldn't help but let out a guttural laugh that shook the place, apparently, since everyone immediately turned their attention to me. "Oh shi- Azuma! Uh... You're here, uh, early..." Ishikawa said sheepishly, throwing the shaving cream can behind him, hitting Saitoh square in the head.

I laughed again, "actually I'm about 20 minutes late."

"Azuma." Saitoh gave me a nod
"Saitoh." I nodded back, "glad to see there's one sane guy down here."
"Heh."

"Alright, clean up everyone. Team meeting in five."
"Yes sir!" Ishikawa saluted and ran into the bathroom, with Kura, Yoshimi and Shimizu quickly following suit.

Oh boy, I love these guys.

"Okay guys. You know the drill." I started off poorly, "this is our second year."
"Yeah, it is." Ishikawa threw in

Anyways! This is our second year. Last year we showed the circuit what we were made of. Like, a second coming of the Knights, a... Second generation, if you will.

Now, I can say with absolute confidence that we can replicate last year's performance. All of it. And even though we lost Sakio to the Knights, the Archers will still stand strong! Am I right?!"

A chorus of "yeah!"s rang through the locker room.

"We start tomorrow. So let's get in one more practice, and let's make sure we give it our all tomorrow against the Ronin. The Archer dynasty has only just begun!"

There were cheers, claps... all the good stuff, naturally.

There is no doubt in my mind that we'll win again this year. With this strong a squad, nothing will stand in our way.

Archers baseball has begun!
