I got paired with my new roomate, Jason. He doesn't seem like a bad guy. Kinda weak. Blonde hair. He's not really into basketball or anything, but he does play NBA Jam Tournament Edition on his game system. i played him and he kicked my ass. That game is such bullshit!

"Ha, you might be good at real basketball, but you ain't nothing at NBA Jam.

"Haha, oh well. I'll be practicing when you ain't around. Next month you won't be laughing at the end of the game, I promise.

"Alright, sure. I've been playing this game all my life bro.

"Yeah well it's nothing like real basketball bro. Wanna go hit the gym with me or nah?"

"I think I'll pass. I'm not much of a gym rat myself."

"Alright man I'll catch you later tonight then, see ya homie."

Basketball practices start next week. I hit the gym today to stay in that top athlete shape. My momma always said that I was always a strong boy. I would either spend my free time ballin' or in the gym.

"You done with these weights, bro?"
I turned around and saw a girl. Latina, dark hair. You could tell she came here often. She was toned, and you could tell she did a lot of squats in her free time.

"Oh, yeah. Go ahead and use them."

"Alright, thanks man. You look pretty big. You play ball or something?"

"Yeah. First year. Name's Ed. Ed Washburn. Compton born-and raised."

"Nice... We got ourselves a ghetto boy. Hey Dinah, come over here. This boy's your type."

"Umm... Hi... Name's Dinah. I'm from Cali myself. You must be the new guy from the hood who got into a fight on his first day," Dinah was black. She had brown hair and a nice rack. I could see myself with that broad, that's fo' sure.

"You got that right girl. Name's Eddie Washburn. I play basketball here as well."

"Nice... We got a balla over here. Here's my number. Call me and we can have a good time one of these days."

"Alright babe I'll definitely call ya."

I regretted not getting the latina's name, but Dinah works for me as well.

First day of practice today. I was so hyped that I coudln't sleep all of last night. Many things raced through my head, including Dinah, Kendrick, Marcus, and of course basketball. I finally fell asleep and slept for about a couple hours. I woke up and pumped iron at the gym, but I was disappointed that Dinah wasn't there. Basketball practice started at noon, but I arrived at the facility to shoot some hoops for a while. Gotta get my field-goal shooting up. I was unpleasantly surprised to see Marcus there.

"Hello Edwin. Nice to see you," he said in a sarcastic voice.

"Hello Marcus Reese. Remember what happened last time we saw each other?"

"Oh yes. I'm not trying to fight you again. Just saying hello, that's all. OK?"

"Alright man. We good. I'll just shoot on the other side of the court and we'll leave each other alone, got it?"

"Alright sure," Marcus said in a very annoyed tone.

Ten minutes later, coach arrived. I immidiately recognized him from what I had heard about him. His name was Frank Russo, 56 years old. He had dark black hair and was built very well. You could tell that man put in the work at the gym. He gave us a cheerful look.

"Ahh welcome to Notre Dame boys. Glad to see we have some boys putting in the work early. And your names are?"

"I'm Edwin Washburn, sir. And that's Marcus Reese. We don't like each other."

"Ahh, a brewing rivalry. I like it. Well, this first week is gonna be hell for you guys. But it's gonna pay off in the end. I'll explain more when the others arrive."

Ten minutes passed, and the rest of the team showed up. From the corner of my eye, I saw Derek Nixon. Starting center. He was big. Looked tough. Intimidating. He would definitely be a challenge.

"Men. I'm Frank Russo. I'm the new head coach at this great university. You're not going to be able to take it easy here. I am tough, but I am fair. From now on you will refer to me as sir, and nothing else. You will speak only when spoken to. Do you understand?"

"Um, yes sir."

"Good, now line up at the baseline."

Coach ran us for 40 minutes. I felt like I was going to die. I started regretting showing up early. For the whole 2-and-a-half hour practice, we ran constantly. We did nothing but run. Coach said he was disappointed in our effort, but we would get better as the year went on. I was just glad to be in my dorm room again. College basketball was going to be tough.

Is every white guy in this log going to be racist?

Also, if he keeps going around saying "I killed a crip with my bare hands" then why doesn't one of these racist assholes report him to the cops?

The only one racist is the dorm director. The coach isn't racist at all, he's based on Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. Also the crip thing is more of just a thing he says to intimidate people. But maybe I should just get into the games.

Practice has gotten a bit easier, and the team is looking pretty good right now. Here's the roster:
C Derek Nixon
PF Edwin Washburn
SF Grant Anderson
SG Anthony Manley
PG Theo Hill
6 Derek Meeks
7 Devin Carson
8 Leon Riggs
9 Justin Mosley
10 Levar Sweeney
11 Ben Chapman
12 Marcus Reese

We ain't a bad bunch of guys, and Marcus has gotten better towards me. Coach is a pretty good guy when it comes down to things. He truly cares about us, and he's always there to help us. The two months before the season were long and hard. Classes started, and while it's tough, I'm doing pretty well so far. Dinah and I have talked a bit so far, and we have a lot in common. Her latina friend is named Nina, by the way. Anyway, our opening game is November 9 vs. Penn State. Should be a fun one.

Game tonight. On the road vs. Penn State. It's my first chance to make it big in the basketball world.

"Alright gentlemen. Listen up. We've got a big game tonight. I expect you guys to be a bit rusty, but we gotta stick to the gameplan. Edwin, I want you to step it up tonight. We're going to rely on
you tonight. Derek, you need to clean the glass tonight. 10 rebounds at least. Now let's go out and grab our first win!

It was a great start for me, 7 points on 3-6 shooting. We led 14-6 when I was subbed out.

"Nice, Edwin! Keep up the hard work. Just need some more boards!"

At half, we led 18-16, but coach wasn't pleased.

"Men, I'm not happy We gotta limit the fastbreak opportunities, and we can't keep missing shots. Run the offense, men! We've had two months now!"

In the second half, we pulled away. I scored 22 points in the second half, playing the whole time. We secured a 49-38 victory, a good start to the season.

FINAL:
Notre Dame 49
Penn State 38

My Stats:
29 PTS, 7 REB, 13/23 FG, 3/3 FT
