Texas Rangers (58-40) at Miami Marlins (38-59)

Matchup: LHP Yohander Mendez (11-3, 3.85) vs. LHP Wei-Yin Chen (4-9, 5.29)

S: Tom Windle (1) — 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Game Recap

A combination of strong hitting and strong pitching — and a little chaos — powered the Rangers to a 7-2 win over the Marlins on Sunday afternoon.

Four Rangers players had two hits: Willie Calhoun (making his team debut), Eric Hosmer, Drew Stubbs, and Elvis Andrus. Additionally, the bullpen did an excellent job behind starter Yohander Mendez, with lefty Tom Windle (also making his team debut) recording a three-inning save. (He struck out Giancarlo Stanton twice in two at-bats!)

A chaotic sixth inning also helped rally the Rangers to victory, with two sacrifice flies, three walks, and a throwing error leading to a four-run inning. The Rangers had a total of four sacrifices — one bunt and three flies — on the day.

Marlins lefty Wei-Yin Chen departed after just 56 pitches due to a back injury. He is day-to-day with what the team is calling “back stiffness”.

Team news:

RHP Joakim Soria, acquired from Toronto on Saturday, was activated after the game. LHP Mason Melotakis (17 G, 2-0, 1.90 ERA) was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Hickory infielder Tanner Chock, our 25th-round pick in 2017, is out for the season after suffering a torn UCL in a game recently. Chock had hit a combined .407/.426/.559 across the Low-A and Single-A levels this season while continuing to receive instruction and regular work at second base, along with some action at first base and DH.

League news:

Players of the Week have been announced!

American League: Royals LF Ryan O’Hearn (.455, 3 HR, 6 RBI)
National League: Cardinals RF Randal Grichuk (.357, 4 HR, 7 RBI)

Game Recap

Nomar Mazara, Rougned Odor, and Eric Hosmer all homered to power the Rangers to a 6-5 win over Baltimore.

Mazara led off the game with his fifth leadoff home run of the season, a mammoth 442-foot blast to right field. Odor then added a solo shot in the third, and Hosmer drove in two runs with his home run in the seventh.

The Rangers barely avoided blowing the lead, as Yu Darvish loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and allowed one run to score. Erasmo Ramirez came on and allowed another hit, scoring a run, but then struck out a batter. Alex Claudio then came in and induced a ground ball, and a 4-2-3 double play got the Rangers out of the inning.

Team news:

LHP Tyler Skaggs has been claimed off waivers from St. Louis. LF/2B Willie Calhoun was optioned to Round Rock as a corresponding move, with Skaggs set to be available out of the bullpen in tomorrow’s game at Baltimore.

Finn’s Commentary

Things are lookin’ good, y’all. We’re trying to make a push for the division title, as we’re only 5 games back of Houston (who’s got the best record in all of baseball), so we’re going to be fighting every game to try to overtake the ‘Stros and hopefully be able to bring up some reinforcements in September to help keep our guys fresh for the playoff run.

I’d like to have a four-man bench ideally, but right now we’re trying to get a look at both Skaggs and Windle as a second lefty out of the ‘pen, and pretty much only Windle has options remaining that we’d really be willing to use. I’d say there’s a decent chance someone gets DFA’d on 8/31 if we’re still in that position, as we’re probably going to want a deeper bench for the playoffs — plus taking a guy out of the rotation, we’d be going with a nine-man bullpen and that’s ridiculous.

Also: Mike Trout is *(censored)* awesome.

Texas Rangers (61-40) at Baltimore Orioles (44-56)

BAL…0-0-0-0-0-0-0-2-1…3-7-0

L: Matt Bush (3-1) — 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 0 K

Game Recap

Despite an excellent outing from starter Cole Hamels, Texas was unable to hold off Baltimore’s ninth-inning rally and dropped the game, 3-2, on Wednesday night.

Hamels pitched 7.1 innings, scattering six hits and a walk and adding five strikeouts. He left the game with two runners on base, and Tyler Clippard allowed both to score, giving Baltimore the lead in the eighth inning on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout.

In the top of the ninth, Adrian Beltre tied the game with a two-out single to left field, but in the bottom half, things fell apart for the Rangers. With right-hander Matt Bush on the mound, leadoff man Jonathan Schoop reached on an error by Joey Gallo. Trey Mancini followed with a walk, and after a flyout, Hyun-Soo Kim hit a pinch-hit single to load the bases. Bush then got to a 3-1 count against center fielder Adam Jones before walking in the game’s winning run.

Also notable: Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman (calf strain) left in the third inning, and is day-to-day.

Team news:

Minor-league pitchers Tayron Guerrero, Clayton Cook, and Brady Dragmire have all been granted their unconditional release. Guerrero, 27, had been at AAA Round Rock with an 0-1 record, 1 save, and a 4.00 ERA in 8 games, and made 5 appearances with a 4.50 ERA in the majors this season. Cook, 28, was 0-1 with 2 saves and an 8.44 ERA in 7 games at AA Frisco. Dragmire, 25, was 5-4 with 7 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 37 games at Frisco. All three were due to become free agents at the end of the season.

L: Bundy (2-8) — 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R (3 ER), 0 BB, 1 K

Game Recap

Home runs from Nomar Mazara, Rougned Odor, and Eric Hosmer and a strong start from Martin Perez propelled the Rangers to a 6-2 victory over the Orioles in Thursday afternoon’s tilt.

Mazara started the scoring with a solo shot off Dylan Bundy in the third inning, the longest of the night at 403 feet. Chris Davis answered an inning later with a two-run homer down the line, but Rougned Odor then answered back with a two-run shot of his own in the fifth. Hosmer’s three-run blast in the eighth inning provided key insurance runs, and ironically came against lefty Donnie Hart who had just been put in to face him.

Left-hander Tyler Skaggs made his team debut in the ninth, loading the bases but working out of the jam with two strikeouts and a flyout to preserve the win.

Team news:

Joey Gallo has just signed a 9-year contract extension worth a total of $103.5 million! The deal is backloaded slightly with a $2.2 million base salary for 2019, $4.8 million in 2020, $8.5 million in 2021, and $13 million in 2022 going up to $15 million for the final five years of the deal, with an opt-out after 2025 (with 2 years left on the deal). Gallo, 24, has been one of the team’s best hitters this season, with a .235 batting average, .326 on-base percentage, .545 slugging percentage, and 29 home runs (tied with Nomar Mazara for the team lead). He has also proved quite versatile with 9 starts at first base, 24 at third base, 25 in left field, and 12 in center field.

we hit back to back to back homers tho

Team news:

Shortstop Elvis Andrus (thigh) left in the sixth inning after being hit by a pitch. He is listed as day-to-day but could go on the DL, with manager Finn Fletcher already carrying a short bench and utility player Drew Robinson the only other competent shortstop on the roster. A number of possible replacements loom at Triple-A, though none are currently on the 40-man roster.

Game Recap

A fierce sixth-inning rally helped the Rangers come back to win a thrilling, 13-inning affair with the Tigers.

Nomar Mazara was responsible for the winning run. With the bases loaded and two outs, he stepped to the plate against righty Joe Jimenez, who had already thrown 60 pitches but was inexplicably kept in the game with three other relievers still in the bullpen. Mazara took the decisive 3-1 pitch, forcing in ninth-inning substitute Drew Stubbs for the literal walk-off.

None of this would have been possible without the Rangers’ sixth-inning comeback, in which Mazara, Rougned Odor, and Drew Robinson all homered; Robinson’s homer came first and drove in three runs, followed later by Mazara and Odor’s back-to-back solo shots, all off Justin Verlander.

For Texas, Eric Hosmer extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 4 for 7 with a pair of doubles.

Team news:

LHP Tyler Skaggs was designated for assignment. Skaggs was claimed off waivers from St. Louis on 8/1, and pitched in two games for the team, allowing three runs in 2.2 innings.

INF/OF Andrew Romine had his contract purchased from Round Rock (AAA). Romine has played sparingly for the Express (7 games, .188 AVG) since being outrighted on 7/8, but will come up to provide depth with shortstop Elvis Andrus still out due to a thigh injury.

League news:

Players of the Week were announced! The American League winner was our very own Nomar Mazara, who hit .471 with 4 home runs and 10 RBI last week! In the National League, Phillies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez took home the award, hitting .500 with 4 home runs and 10 RBI!

L: Hamels (10-6) — 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R (6 ER), 2 BB, 4 K

Game Recap

Three-hit games from Luis Urias and Manuel Margot powered the Padres to a 9-2 win over the Rangers.

Urias, batting second, was 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, and two runs. Meanwhile, Margot batted fifth and was 3 for 5 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs. Yangervis Solarte also had three hits out of the six-hole, and a strong performance on the mound from Jarred Cosart helped keep San Diego in the lead.

For the Rangers, only Mike Trout (2 for 3, one walk, one run) and Joey Gallo (1 for 4, two-run home run) were able to record hits on the night, and their pitching wasn’t too good either.
