News Paper Headline Thing

Trever Miller has been place on the 10 day IL for experiencing back spasms. We expect him to miss the minimum of 10 days while Matt Garza is called up to take his place.

May 28th, 2008

BREAKING: A few days after requesting a trade, the Rays (27-26) and Marlins (32-20) have agreed to terms for a 1-1 trade. The Rays
send over Carlos Pena and the Marlins are giving back Andrew Miller. To help even things out the Rays have also sent 3000 in cash to help pay off
Pena's remaining salary for the year. We've been told that Miller will now become the team's setup pitcher, kicking Al Reyes into a general relief role.

ROSTER MOVE: With the acquisition of an arm, the Rays have called up Willy Aybar from AAA and outrighted Jason Hammel to AAA.
It seems that Aybar will become the team's 3B allowing Zobrist to move across the diamond back to 1B.

Rays' payroll decreased from 70765 to 63115 (80000 payroll limit).
Trades used: 1
Trades remaining: 2

.
.

MLB Network Analysis:
The move seems to be beneficial to both sides as the Marlins now have a DH threat between Mike Jacobs or Carlos Pena for a potential playoff berth;
and the Rays get a good relief arm in return. Pena still has 2 years left on his contract which prevents the Marlins from having to find a rental, likewise for the Rays
who have a sophomore pitcher that seems to already have a good groove for the 2008 season.

News Paper Headline Thing

Rays' bullpen once again had a tough time attempting to hold onto the lead. Andrew Miller had a 3-run lead behind him during the top of the 8th when he allowed a 2-out double to
Nick Swisher. The game's turn pointing occurred when Iwamura made a horrendous mental error. A weak grounder came to him from Orlando Cabrera and tried
to throw out Swisher at 3rd - called safe - when he could've easily gotten the sure out at 1B. Miller then gave up a 3-run home run to Jim Thome which tied the game.
Troy Percival couldn't keep the game at a standstill and ended up allowing a few hits which scored the game-winning-run.
The Rays will look to take game 3 of 4 tomorrow.

(accidentally dun goofed by advancing too quickly and didn't get pictures of the White Sox's box score lol)

As the draft looms, it remains uncertain if the Rays will pick with the philosophy of best available or team needs. We wouldn't be surprised to see
a little bit of both to round off the team in general. Stats of the team have been posted...

There have also been rumors that teams in the NL Central (Cardinals [31-26] and the Reds [30-27]) are eyeing certain veteran players to help fill pitching needs and bench depth.

News Paper Headline Thing

After winning the first game of the series, the Rays look to keep the momentum up. Chuck James against Josh Rupe at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
Both teams managed to cash in some runs early in the game. The Rays knocked Rupe out of the game in the 4th inning where they did most of their damage. To seal their fate,
BJ Upton blasted a home run way out to left center field - a whopping 475 feet - during the top of the 9th inning.
From the beginning of the season it was expected that this Rays team was going to be at the bottom of the barrel for power production. BJ Upton ignored those predictions and now leads the AL
in the home run department with 18.
MLB HR leaders are:
Adam Dunn - 23
Chase Utley - 19
BJ Upton/Chipper Jones - 18

Akinori Iwamura was placed on the 10 day IL after the game. It appears that he has shoulder pain from a stolen base during the game but managed to play through it. Elliot Johnson will
be called up to make his MLB debut on Sunday (6/8) at 2B.

News Paper Headline Thing

The 2008 MLB draft has concluded. The Rays selected 4 players:
Round 1, 1st overall: Tyler Gemoll, SS (20 y/o)
Round 2, 1st overall: Xavier Riley, SP/RP (22 y/o)
Round 3, 1st overall: Jeff Day, RF/3B/1B (18 y/o)
Round 4, 1st overall: Jose Terrero, IF (24 y/o)

Seems that the Rays went position player heavy along with potentially drafting their SS for the future.

Gemoll is predicted to be a full-time player around 2010; he brings an all-rounder skill set slightly focused on fielding. Scouts says his potential for all aspects can be well-above average.
Riley's ceiling is not nearly as high as Gemoll but being slightly older may require less development time. Riley is predicted to be a middle/end of the rotation starter with a long relief role as well.
Day can fit nicely around the field, seems a bit quick for a corner player but may be developed into a more middle IF-type if/when called up.
Terrero's aggressive run style quickly (pun lol) caught the Ray's attention as he loves to take more bases than given. He can be molded into a nice role player in the future.

i mean the 5-star ones - in this draft - wouldve been all F players. i haven't personally noticed the difference with star potential either, prolly from me not using gray-bars all that often lol

News Paper Headline Thing

The final match in a 3-game series just wrapped up between cross-state rivals. Hideo Nomo against Doug Waetcher of the Marlins.
The Rays managed to hold out and win the game 7-3. The game was ripped open from the start as the Marlins showed signs of life first. Those were quickly
deadened when Elliot Johnson smoked a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the 1st. The Rays managed to take the lead against when Zobrist
doubled to allowed Aybar to score; and the Rays' bullpen managed to be air-tight and held the Marlins quiet.

With Aybar and Elliot both producing well, it will be a tough decision to find the odd-person out when Iwamura returns from the IL; considering
Iwamura plays 2B and 3B, both which Aybar and Johnson are stationed at.

There have also been rumors of Nomo being a prime candidate for a trade now that the 39 year old is a sparkling 6-1 with a respectable 4.05 ERA in a heavy hitting division.

News Paper Headline Thing

BREAKING: Tampa Bay has acquired Joey Votto and Johnny Cueto from the Reds in exchange for Rocco Baldelli, Hideo Nomo, and Dan Wheeler.

The 1st place Reds (40-35, 5 games up) seem to be putting it all on the table as they have a lot of big name FA's either this season or the next (Harang, Arroyo, Dunn, Griffey Jr.)
along with an aging roster. This move now allows the defensive liability, Adam Dunn, to move to 1B making Baldelli or Ryan Freel (RIP) their everyday left fielder. This also
puts Hatteberg as a DH or secondary 1B if Dunn shifts to LF allowing for more depth. The Reds still have a couple more young arms (Edison Volquez, Homer Bailey) that can still be used in trades to bolster their bullpen.
Nomo also becomes an upgrade over Cueto which improves their rotation. Wheeler's last few outings were enough to grab the Reds' attention as they beefed up the 3 major aspects of a roster (hitters, starters, bullpen).

The Rays (39-33) now get a potential top 1B and a 2/3 line starter for the next few years. We understand the development stage of players but it remains slightly confusing as to why the Rays are
keeping Cueto in AAA with decent numbers: 77 IP, 7-2, 1 SV, 75 K, 4.21 ERA. Votto has only been used a pinch hitter/injury replacement starter and wasn't finding much playing time at all (30 G, 35 AB, .343 BA, 3 HR, 9 RBI). This may be Votto's ticket to show-case his skill set.

The Rays still have a few more potential trade value players that we may see pack their bags within the next month and a half (Crawford, Reyes, Miller).

Payroll decreased: 63115 --> 61445 (80000 payroll limit)
Trades completed/Remaining: 2/1

.
.
Roster Moves:

Iwamura activated from IL -> Elliot Johnson optioned to AAA
Cueto sent to AAA to work on control and command issues
Votto added to MLB roster and starting at 1B
Garza called up and added to starting rotation
JP Howell called up and will be a long reliever

Since Baldelli was traded, I'll claim Joey Votto as a replacement! While he's slow and below-average in the field, he's got a lot of potential at the plate. Plus, he doesn't kick people in the head.

I'm sad to see my client Elliot Johnson demoted, but I understand the move, and he'd like to pass on that he was grateful for the opportunity to start. He plans to train hard this offseason to become a more versatile player in the field, and improve his batting as well.

Additionally, my client Carl Crawford hopes he can stay with this young, rising organisation, even if he is traded, he will likely think about re-signing with the Rays in free agency.

currently contacting minor league staff to focus on hitting and fielding improvement

we acknowledge this as it may alter our plans moving forward

News Paper Headline Thing

Edwin Jackson faced-off against Wesley Wright of the Astros.
Things were relatively calm for most of the game. The only source of run support for the Rays came from 2 solo shots by their 9th hitter, Bartlett.
Jackson gave up more hits than IP but was able to minimize any damage to 1 run. With A. Miller's microscopic ERA, it might lead to
Percival having a shorter leash as the closer. Both of them have been lock-down pitchers over the past few weeks so we see nothing subject to change.

The Rays have won 12 of their last 15 games even after they started trading some of their veteran players. If they keep this trend up, they may hold off on selling and might keep
the current roster they have.
