The Rays fell to the Mariners 3-1. Wilkerson's 2-run homerun in the 2nd inning was enough to hold the lead for the M's as they went on to score 1 more run in the 8th. Lohse's record may not be the best telling with an almost .500 record with an average 4.06 ERA. Crawford and Votto provided more than half the team's offense in this game.

Prior to the game Gemoll was sent down to AAA for an undisclosed reason - Volquez was called for as a replacement. This comes as a bit of a surprise since it's so late in the season; according to the CBA, Gemoll will have to return to the MLB roster if the Rays make the playoffs come October. We suspect that his offensive woes are the reason for it as he has been one of the top fielders in the league. So we hope that he gets to work on his bat control as he was hitting .220 when he was sent down. Terrero is expected to fill in time on the left side of the infield during Gemoll's absence.

The Rays pulled out a win in 11 innings against the Twins. Upton's solo shot was immediately matched by the Twins as they tied the game in the half inning after. Recent former-Ray, Andrew Miller gave up the go-ahead runs in the 11th which secured the Rays' win after that inning. Volquez had some trouble finishing the game but Marcum was able to get the save.

The Rays beat their division rivals 5-3. Upton's solo shot set the tone for the rest of the game as the Rays extended their lead and held on to the win. Marcum was again called to get a 1 out save. The Rays snuck into 1st place of the AL east have have magic number of 6. Even if they lose hold of the division title, they would seem to fall into the Wild Card spot as the Yankees currently settle there.

The next post will be any potential playoff roster, along with season stats.

After winning the division, the Rays have released their post-season roster.

Below that are the stats from the 2012 season. Upton led the team in OPS with a .975 (prolly would be slightly higher since watch games dont produce many walks). Kazmir with a top 3 ERA finish once again but sadly did not win the triple crown; Verlander had about 40 more strikeouts than him.

The Rays have advanced to the ALCS after beating the Royals 9-1; along with a monstrous 20 team hits. The Rays really took off in the latter 3rd of the game scoring 7 of their 9 runs then. Gross was easily the ALDS MVP of this series hitting a whopping .667 over the 4 games. The Rays look to take on the Angels in the ALCS after they swept the Yankees.

For the 4th time in the past 5 seasons, the Rays are going to the World Series again. The Angels had a better offense from a statistical standpoint (non-run POV) but the Rays were more efficient by managing to score the only run of the game. Late-inning heroics by Price most likely saved the game for them. Price was called upon to enter the game during the 7th inning; 1 out with runners on 2nd and 3rd.... He produced 2 strikeouts on 6 pitches, terminating the threat. Sonnanstine will likely be the starting pitcher for game 1 of the World Series since Kazmir pitched the day before.

The Rays have managed to force a game 7 with the Brewers. Marcum was called into the game to get a 6 out save when he let up a 3-run home run off the bat of Braun to swap the lead. Entering the bottom of the 9th inning, the Rays were only down 6-5. 3 hits and 1 error later, the Rays were able to take the lead again ending with a Rush walk-off hit over the SS. Sonnanstine will be the starter for game 7.

The Rays have win the World Series for a 2nd straight year, 4 times in the past 5 years. Price pitched his heart out in an incredible relief performance of 5 1/3 IP with 0 ER earning the victory (1 hit allowed). Votto ended the game with his walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th. The unfortunate news is that Zobrist tore his ACL sliding into 3rd base during the 2nd inning. A normal timeline recovery is about 6-8 months. So opening day might be in jeopardy for him.

The next post will be league leaders and awards.

No player from the Rays has announced their retirement, so the roster remains the same for now. But the Rays do have 9 award winners from this season:

Home Run Leader - Melvin Upton Jr. (2nd)
ERA title - Scott Kazmir (4rd)
Wins title - Scott Kazmir (3rd), David Price
AL Cy Young Award - Scott Kazmir (4th)
Gold Glove (1B) - Adam LaRoche
Silver Slugger (OF) - Carl Crawford (2nd)
Silver Slugger (OF) - Melvin Upton Jr.
World Series MVP - Joey Votto

The new salary cap has been posted. Increase from 87500 to 90350 (2100 from inflation, 750 from team success).

Contract negotiations begin soon, a few of the big names that can elect FA are (but not limited to): Upton, Lohse, Floyd, Sonnanstine

A lot of transactions have occurred over the past winter meetings event. The Rays had several players leave in FA for other teams:
Gavin Floyd - 5y/12750 with the Giants
Kyle Lohse - 3y/13500 with the Brewers
Chad Orvella - 3y/3000 with the Athletics
Gabe Gross - 4y/10000 with the Athletics
Melvin Upton Jr. - 5y/24000 with the Padres

Upton's deal makes him the 2nd highest paid player for AAV... trailing only A-rod who is at 27000. Lohse and Floyd had great years and wanted their payout. Gross also had a phenomenal season after riding the pine for a few years and looks to have a starting role with the A's.
.
.
.
Some of the bigger in-house signing increases the Rays made are:
Andy Sonnanstine: 1700 -> 1y/6000
Elliot Johnson: 900 -> 1y/2000
.
.
.
The Rays also signed 3 FA (i broke my rule by allowing 1 more since i lost so many players recently, 1 of them will just be for depth):
Carlos Pena - 2y/2200
Michael Bourn - 5y/4500
Corey Patterson - 1y/1800

Pena returns to the Rays after almost 5 years. He was a bench player for the past couple of seasons and looks to do the same with the Rays, barring any injury/trade/etc then he might be added to the batting order.
Bourn should slot into the starting RF role after the Rays lost both their corner outfielders. A speedster that can produce a respectable batting average; the Rays locked him up for any remaining prime years.
Patterson just seems to be a depth/emergency role for now (same with Schierholtz). Both Neal Totten and Jesse Budzinski are still developing in AAA and the Rays don't seem eager to rush them.
