The Rays already acquired a player from the FA pool, Jonathan Broxton - to a 1y/1500 deal. In order to be in accordance with the salary cap, the Rays released Lance Sandberg and Jose Capellan. Sandberg struggled in the minors and it seems the Rays were ready to move on from him. Capellan had a down year last season and now is being replaced by Broxton.
.
.
.
The Rays also revealed their starting MLB roster for the season with Zobrist on the 10-day IL. He is expected to miss at the very least 1 month. Jonah Vermilyea, 2nd round pick from 2010, is making his MLB debut this season in the starting rotation.

Rays payroll/cap - 89960/90350
Rays FA signings used/allowed - 1/2

Kazmir opened up the season in style, spinning a 1-run CG earning the win. He was 2 outs away from a shutout CG but the O's spoiled it by having 3 base knocks in the 9th inning. Jack Cust hit the team's first HR of the season in the 2nd inning. The Rays' winning window might have a slight opening but it will be interesting to see how the team does.

PS: @PP27, Day went 1-3 if youre curious

The Rays pull off a win against the Blue Jays with a score of 2-1. Former-Ray Noah Lowry threw a CG but walked away with the loss as Sonnanstine had a better performance. It's a young season, but the AL east looks scrambled for the time being.

Price out-dueled King Felix to beat the M's by a score of 6-1. The Rays' bats remain hot as they have 4 players hitting at or above .300 so far. LaRoche's 3-run HR was the final batter that Felix faced which solidified the Rays' lead.

Zobrist should be returning from the IL within the next week or so, but the Rays will have to send a player down to AAA when it occurs.

Shields was masterful against the Indians; only allowing 4 hits (0 BB) through 8 SO innings. Marcum worked quickly to get the save. Votto's solo HR in the 1st theoretically could've been enough for the win but Cust tacked 1 more on in the 6th inning for safe measure. Zobrist was activated from the IL a few days ago and Patterson was sent down to AAA as the odd-person out. The Rays still hover closely around .500 but the rest of the division doesn't seem to have anything else going for them at the moment.

Vermilyea had a good outing to earn him a win over the Tigers. No HR in this game, but the Rays managed to put 7 runs on the board. Some of the bench players found their way into the lineup today and they were able to hold their own.

The 2013 MLB draft has finished and the Rays came away with 2 new players. Rick Sandberg and Duncan Minges. Scouts have R. Sandberg to be about the same level as Jesus Lizarraga so some catcher depth clustering might show up later on. Sandberg may have the edge since he is 3 years younger (more time to practice if on the MLB roster per my rules). Minges has a nice 4-seamer and needs some work on control.
The Rays had to release a player to stay under the salary cap, Jesse Budzinski will unfortunately have to pack his bags.

Interesting choices. First guy looks he’ll really good defensively. It’ll be interesting to see how you juggle the catcher position, now that you’ve got four (?) options.

Volquez earned the victory against his former team with the score being 5-1. Votto produced 80% of the team's offense in the game along with a 2-run HR; the other HR in the game was a Zobrist solo shot. No trade rumors have surfaced yet, but the Rays' role remains precarious as to their trading tactic (buyer/seller, etc).

Kazmir improved to 7-4 after going 7 innings and giving up 1 run. The middle of the Rays' order provided most of the offense in this one. Marcum was called in for the 6 out save as the rest of the bullpen was taxed over the past week. (not gonna lie, i advanced thru the menus too quickly after having Pena pinch hit, so he had to face at least 1 batter). The Rays dropped under .500 and now find themselves tied for 3rd in the AL East.

The Rays have completed a blockbuster trade, not in the sense of buying but this time the opposite. They are sending:
Joey Votto - 1y/8500
Ben Zobrist - 1y/8000
Andy Sonnanstine - 1y/6000
to the Pirates in exchange for
Matt Cain - 2y/440
Luis Rivas - 1y/420

The Pirates sit at 47-36 while the Rays are at 40-43. The Bucs have the 3rd best record in the MLB and this trade makes them serious contenders. The main trade piece was Matt Cain who is on the IL for the rest of the season with a torn labrum (was on AAA). With little cap room, the Rays decided to sell some soon-to-be FA as they would most likely lose them in the off-season. There are other soon-to-be FA on this team, so the rumors might start to heat up even more.
.
.
.
After the trade, the Rays signed FA Andrew Miller and absorbed the remaining value of the contract he signed with them last season; now at 1y/3000. He was called up to the MLB and placed in the bullpen.
.
.
.
Last night the Rays put Jack Cust on the 10 day IL with a torn calf muscle. He is expected to miss almost 2 months with this injury. (the team pic doesn't show the injured mood-face since it was only a 1 day injury, but RNG gave me 55 days for the recovery)
.
.
.
Rays trades used/allowed - 1/3
Rays FA signings used/allowed - 2/2 (maxed out for 2013)
Rays payroll/cap - 71660/90350

Prior to the game it was announced that Andrew Miller will be placed on the IL with wrist discomfort. It is unknown as to how long he will be on the shelf. Corey Patterson will return to the MLB roster as a bench player for now.
.
.
.
Some other news is that the Rays have made a 2nd trade. They are sending:
Luke Rush - 1y/710
to the Giants for
Morgan Ensberg - 1y/560
Rich Aurilia - 1y/4960
Ray Durham - 2y/5760

The trade came as a surprise to many of us including the Giants who were somewhat reluctant to take Rush due to their payroll - his salary starts increasing after this season. Rush's agent demanded that Rush play near his hometown after the Rays decided to start selling for this season. Without making the situation worse, the Rays agreed and sent Rush away. So in return for taking the Giants' starting 3B (Ensberg), the Rays agreed to take some of their older players' salaries as a way for the Giants to dump contracts. Durham and Aurilia will remain in AAA for the time being.

The Royals shutout the Rays in a 2-0 win. After a couple of trades, the Rays were unable to put any runs on the board. They had the same amount of team hits as the Royals but the Royals were able to take advantage of their RISP. The Rays are allowed 1 more trade so we should see what happens later on.

Because of the Rush trade, the Rays called up Jesus Lizarraga. He and Shawn Riggans will split time behind the plate for now.

Rush has turned into quite the elite defender. Tough loss, but you’ve got a couple young catchers developing.

I suppose I should take Carlos Pena as an agent, seeing as I had him initially.

Another trade has been completed, this time the Rays and Blues Jays struck a deal. Seems a little odd that intradivision teams would do this, but there's more to it then we might know. The Rays are giving up:

Jonathan Broxton - 1y/1500
and the Blue Jays are sending
Max Scherzer - 1y/1850
Brandon League - 1y/440
Shannon Stewart - 2y/410

Yet again, the Rays traded for a starting pitcher that finds himself on the shelf for the rest of 2013; Scherzer underwent knee surgery (was in AAA during the trade) but is expected to make a full recovery come 2014 (implying he has a contract then). Broxton has been excellent this season sporting a 2.60 ERA through 38 IP. The potential FA reliever will now pitch for the 1st place team in the AL East and hopes to have an impact in the post-season (if clinched). League and Stewart may have been salary dumps and also add some depth to the Rays. The former will be in the Rays' bullpen while the latter will remain in AAA.
.
.
.
I also posted the team layout since a lot of players have been moved around recently
.
.
.
Rays trades used/allowed - 3/3 (maxed out for 2013 regular season)
Rays FA signings used/allowed - 2/2 (maxed out for 2013)
Rays payroll/cap - 83430/90350
