The thing is, then it would conflict with the "Tag All 2008 Pages [[Category:MLB Power Pros 2008]]" rule (per PM "MLB Power Pros Wiki editing is resuming" Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:24 pm). When that rule came into play, I simply assumed every page should be tagged with any categories it belonged to, starting with 2007/2008 and all the way down the hierarchy.

Was that more of a temporary rule till we got things in order?

Yes... since I just needed a blanket statement before putting it all together, since I was slow doing that. We needed to start gathering information and I wasn't properly prepared with a wiki tree structure.

Thankfully the community has been good in coming up with organizational ideas, implementing them however, is the grunt work.

Bummer. I wish I'd known before going on the tagging rampage.

So can we assume the "Tag all 2008 pages with [[Category:MLB Power Pros 2008]]" rule revoked?

That category is a pain to navigate since every page on 2008 is in there.

Awww! Sorry dude, ya got proactive and now we wasted work! DOH!

Anyways, it helps keep everything in order at least, you can slowly reduce the main category and divert it to their proper ones.

The following Category pages have been edited manually to add entries, which, from what little I know of Wiki guidelines, is not the right way to do it:
http://www.mlbppworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Custom_Teams
http://www.mlbppworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Custom_Fielders_(Wii)_2008
http://www.mlbppworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Custom_Pitchers_(Wii)_2008

My suggestion: How about setting a rule to prefix custom player pages with their main positions?
That way, we can take advantage of the fact that Category pages sort alphabetically.
Example: Catchers- Look under "C"; Firstbaseman-Look under "1"; And so on...

Here's one rule I'd be okay with 'double dipping' categories. Sorting the list by both name and by position (then name). Make each position sub category unique (wii/ps2 or 2007/2008), so they don't get mangled together.

My memory fails me, but on a few of the pages that contain my "infobox sidebar", the category is defined Last name, First name although it appears first name last name. Using this in a template (for ease of use) can help solidify the standard.

A category per position sounds like overkill to me; Most of the position categories are only going to have 2-5 players. Plus, how many people actually look up players alphabetically?

What we basically need is one page that sorts players by position, like the one the contributors created by editing the category page (as opposed to having to navigate to subcategories that only have 2-5 players).

Well, that's where my initial suggestion comes into play. We can take advantage of the current setup by simply prefixing each player page with a unique letter corresponding to a fielding position. That way when they get sorted alphabetically, they'll be sorted by position, then by the first letter of their name.

Alternatively, there could be a non-category wiki page (ex Custom Player Almanac Wii 2008) that allows users to manually add their players with descriptions. (Basically dump the edited portion of the category pages onto a separate wiki page)

Alright, how about this one...

Two Wiki Extensions are now required.
Category Tree
Tag As Category

The first one allows sub categories to be opened without leaving the page (Javascript required). This allows us to organize as many sub categories as we want (even if they don't have many in them) and still be viewable on the main category page. This avoids the need to open the sub category page looking for 0 or 1 item (the extension also counts # of entries). (They can still be double tagged if we so incline)

The second one is an ease of use to add categories to a page without having to actually click "EDIT", type the code, and click "SUBMIT" just to add one stinking category. I suppose I could modify the code to perform "untagging" as well, it should be a quick edit (maybe). DS can install the original, I can test out a modification on my own site and give him an updated php to upgrade the capabilities.

If you like the idea, I can have DS install them and we can make the magic go faster.
