You have to put maps (bsp files) in the maps folder in your action dir. Normally you just extract the package to action folder since it contains other folders such as textures, env,... You might want to check action/maps/ if you accidentally extracted the packages in it and now got mentioned folders in it.
I wouldn't suggest downloading map packs, though. I don't know if they're updated regularly but I bet they consist maps you won't even play. Just download the ones you need seperately. _________________ aka Matic

all maps should be in [yourquake2folder]\action\maps\
if there are folders in [yourquake2folder]\action\maps\ with bsp files in it then move them to [yourquake2folder]\action\maps\ _________________ There's a chopper coming in 3 days and there's a katana on top of the cafe and that's all you need to know

One other thing to bear in mind is that some of the standalone map ZIPs are a horrible mess.
So someone might have put all the map files in one ZIP, no directory structure.
Or compressed \maps\*.* with the intent that you extract that folder to your \quake2\action\ folder.
Or compressed \action\maps\*.* with the intent that you extract that folder to your \quake2\ folder.
So if you end up with crap like \quake2\action\action\maps\, that's part of the problem right there.
Easiest solution: Go to AQMD and spend the time to download uberPAK. It has 180 or so maps in a few big, self-contained PAK files. All the path issues are as fixed as possible, all the missing sounds and other content things are replaced and fixed up, and the thing is designed to work on both windows and linux systems (sorry, didn't have OS X or really even MacOS Classic machine handy when I made it).
Ah, I might be wrong about the maps. I think it's 180 MB and unextracts to about 450 MB, forget how many maps are in there.
------------
Again, why am I harping on uberPAK? Because once you install it, most of your problems will be fixed. Any map ZIPs made AFTER uberPAK's cutoff will probably be GOOD ZIPS. Meaning, you know exactly where to place them, the map authors aren't doing any action/action/action/maps crap.
PAKs are quicker to load for the filesystem than the raw unextracted map files and take up less room overall. If you really want to whine that omg u need qped or pakexplorer to open pak files, just install uberSERVER instead. It's the same as uberPAK but they are all pre-extracted so that server installs can autodownload the map content to clients missing the maps. Q2 won't autodownload content INSIDE of PAK files due to some expansion pack issues, though I don't know if anyone modified their Q2 clients/servers to allow this. |

Also, if you don't want to dink around with command line options...
Start up Quake 2.
Hit the ~ key when it's loading the intro.
This should drop you to the quake 2 console.
Type in "game action" and hit ENTER/RETURN.
This should load up the "action" mod.
You can then load up maps directly from the console using "map cliff" or connect to servers directly using "connect xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where the x's are the IP address.
To close the console window, just hit ESC.
I don't bother with a dedicated AQ2 startup shortcut, too lazy to make one. I just load Q2 and load the mod of my choice in the console and away I go. |
